*****5 Star Classroom Internet Sites

November 8, 2005 - Internet Resources in the Classroom

The web sites listed on this page were carefully selected for a day of technology learning and browsing. As we work through the list, please consider which sites you would find useful in your classroom and add them to a Favorites Folder labeled with your name. Here we go........

1. Nauset Schools

Nauset Schools offers many useful and educational links for teachers, parents, administrators, and community members.

2. Search Engines

Billions of sites are available on the Internet. Search engines are tools which search the Internet for specified information. Try the first four search engines below, search for ''elementary education.'' Click on KidsClick and try some of the links listed there. Finally, click on Yahooligans and try some of those links.

3. Web Site Evaluation - Is it a legitimate site?

4. WATCH OUT! HOAXES ARE LURKING!

5. Educational Web Sites

6. Reference Sites

Online reference materials such as dictionaries and thesauri have two distinct advantages over their print counterparts: they offer the most current information and provide access to a wealth of information, which for most schools formerly was only available in a larger library. 7. Research

A close examination of a matter in a search for information or truth. (American Heritage Dictionary)

8. Virtual Field Trip

Virtual field trips are web sites that provide the user with a tour of such places as a museum, a city, or even the heart. Virtual field trips come in many shapes and sizes, some with more structure and complexity than others. Some virtual field trips are just photos and text, while others are more interactive and contain audio and video or even animation. Virtual field trips can be used as an extension or culmination to many lessons or units. Some of the same types of activities that you would plan to follow up an actual field trip would be useful here: handouts, student research, reports, etc. Not only can you experience a virtual field trip, you can also create a virtual field trip for others. 9. Cyberguide

Have you ever read a book with your students and wished there was a collection of good web sites to continue your exploration of this piece of literature? CyberGuides are standards-based projects that center around a book. CyberGuides are a great way to take something familiar and improve upon it with resources available on the web. 10. Key Pals

Start a project with another class, or just create a new friendship with someone on the other side of the globe.

11. WebQuest

''A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web. WebQuests are designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information rather than looking for it, and to support learners' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation.'' (Bernie Dodge)

12. Collaborative Projects

A learning activity or project involving a few or many individuals or groups connected via the Internet. (Teach for Tomorrow-http://tft.merit.edu)
